At WGI, advancing technology means helping shape how innovation is applied in real-world scenarios. Recently, members of our Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) team participated in the 4th Annual FDOT Disaster Response Team (DRT) Training at the SunTrax Advanced Air Mobility and Autonomous & Connected Transportation Testing Grounds in Auburndale, Florida. The event brought together professionals from across the state to strengthen drone-based emergency response capabilities through hands-on training and collaboration.
A Statewide Effort Focused on Readiness
The annual DRT training is a key initiative led by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to prepare certified drone pilots for disaster deployment. This year’s event brought together more than 70 participants from all seven FDOT districts and Central Office, creating a truly statewide training environment.
Designed to simulate real-world emergency conditions, the training combined live flight exercises with classroom instruction. Participants engaged in scenarios focused on precision flying, situational awareness, and rapid data collection, essential components of effective disaster response. Sessions also covered regulatory considerations, including FAA requirements and operating in complex airspace.
By integrating technical and regulatory elements, the event ensured pilots gained a well-rounded understanding of how to safely and effectively deploy UAS technology in critical situations.
Hands-On Training at a Cutting-Edge Facility
SunTrax provided an ideal setting for this immersive experience, offering a controlled environment to safely execute advanced drone maneuvers and evaluate new tools.
A central component of the training included standardized flight exercises based on National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) methodologies. These challenges measured pilot control, accuracy, and sensor use under conditions that mirror real disaster environments.
The use of advanced drone platforms further enhanced the experience, giving participants insight into how modern UAS technology supports rapid response, damage assessment, and infrastructure evaluation in the field.
WGI’s Role in Supporting Training and Collaboration
WGI was proud to play an active role in this year’s training, with several of our FAA Part 107-certified pilots contributing their expertise throughout the event. Our team supported both field exercises and collaborative training efforts, working directly with FDOT personnel to enhance pilot readiness and technical proficiency.
A key focus for WGI was facilitating the outdoor flight training exercises, where our team helped guide participants through structured maneuvering challenges. By sharing best practices and offering real-time feedback, our pilots helped reinforce critical skills needed for high-pressure response scenarios.
Beyond the technical training, the event also provided valuable opportunities for collaboration. Our team members engaged with industry leaders and technology providers, exchanging insights on the latest advancements in UAS applications. These interactions help ensure that our team remains at the forefront of innovation while bringing the most effective solutions to our clients and partners.
Strengthening Disaster Response Through Innovation
Participation in the FDOT DRT Training reflects WGI’s ongoing commitment to leveraging technology in ways that enhance safety, resilience, and operational efficiency. By supporting initiatives that prepare agencies for emergency response, we contribute to stronger, more coordinated efforts when they matter most.
Events like this also highlight the growing role of UAS technology in disaster management, from rapid aerial assessments to real-time data collection that informs decision-making. As these capabilities continue to evolve, WGI remains dedicated to advancing their application through expertise, collaboration, and hands-on involvement.
Looking Ahead
The success of this year’s training underscores the importance of continued investment in both technology and people. By bringing together skilled professionals, innovative tools, and realistic training scenarios, the FDOT DRT program is helping to build a more prepared and responsive network across the state.
For WGI, being part of that effort is both an honor and a responsibility. Our UAS team will continue to support training, share knowledge, and explore new ways to apply drone technology in support of infrastructure, emergency response, and community resilience.
As we look to the future, we remain committed to delivering forward-thinking solutions and helping our partners stay ready for whatever challenges lie ahead.
