Bridging Innovation: Robotic Monitoring Secures Diplomat Beach Resort Pedestrian Bridge

Discover how WGI leveraged robotic monitoring technology to ensure real-time safety and reliability of the Diplomat Beach Resort pedestrian bridge in Hollywood, FL, setting a new standard for proactive infrastructure protection.

At WGI, advancing infrastructure safety means embracing technology that transforms how we monitor and protect critical structures – And the pedestrian bridge at the Diplomat Beach Resort in Hollywood, Florida, serves as a prime example.

More than a pathway for guests, the bridge stands as a vital connection across SR A1A, handling persistent foot traffic while withstanding environmental stress. As such, keeping it safe required a monitoring solution that could deliver precise, continuous insights without disrupting day-to-day operations.

To meet this challenge, WGI deployed a state-of-the-art robotic monitoring system capable of capturing detailed structural data in real-time, helping engineers make decisions both quickly and confidently.

Automated Precision for Real-Time Safety

Spanning nearly 200 feet, the pedestrian bridge demanded constant attention to detect any movement or deformation.

Within just 24 hours of receiving the project, members of WGI’s award-winning Geospatial and Land Surveying team mobilized to assemble a solar-powered robotic total station, set reference targets, and installed monitoring prisms at key points – With remote support ensuring that all reference measurements were precise to aid in an efficient and effective deployment.

At the heart of the system was the Trimble S7 robotic total station, which combines peak angular and distance accuracy with long-range, reflectorless measurement capabilities. Its advanced technologies, which include MagDrive™ and SurePoint™, allow for rapid and silent rotation as well as real-time error corrections in even the most challenging of conditions.

Mounted on an automatic leveling tribrach and powered by solar panels and batteries with cellular connectivity, the system operated continuously without the need for human intervention. Six strategically placed monitoring targets allowed the S7 to capture precise measurements that detect even the smallest of structural shifts.

Over a 60-day period, automated daily measurements provided reliable insights while keeping the bridge fully operational, and above all, safe for guests and pedestrians alike.

Turning Data into Actionable Insights

All data collected was processed using the Trimble 4D Control (T4D) software, a platform that brings together geospatial, environmental, and geotechnical sensors in one easy-to-read interface – Delivering real-time visualization, automated alerts, and custom reports.

Stakeholders received updates four times per day, including hourly reference measurements to empower prompt and informed decision-making while eliminating guesswork.
