Event Recap: Northwest Florida Construction Career Days 2019

WGI consistently wins awards — business, industry, trade, and more. Browse who we serve and what we do, and learn more about this rapidly growing consulting firm.

This past week, WGI had the pleasure of assisting with the very first Construction Career Days event for District 3 in Milton, Florida (just north of Pensacola). This event allows for hundreds of high school students to gain a hands-on learning experience about the many construction-related career opportunities WGI has to offer. WGI has a strong partnership with the FDOT and has participated in many of the Construction Career Day events (CCD) throughout Florida.

Students were given a chance to win Apple AirPods by entering our “Picture Yourself at WGI” photo contest! We’re happy to announce that the winner of the contest was: Thomas @thespiderboiii!

WGI’s Melissa McLeod, Jarret Hansen, and Chris Presnell did a great job introducing the students to CCD and giving them an opportunity to learn more about WGI (also encouraging kids to submit some awesome photos).

Christian Stewart and Stephen Dees had everyone’s full attention as they gave their presentation on emerging technology that focused on mobile lidar and how it can safely and quickly capture detailed point clouds and create 3D models. John Alford and Jeremiah Slaymaker introduced the students to subsurface utility engineering (SUE) and explained how the extensive utility network right beneath their feet was vital to all roadway projects.

Construction Career Days events are organized by transportation industry partners from public and private sectors. Nearly all 50 states hold at least one CCD event. Currently, Florida holds CCD events in the Fort Lauderdale, Jacksonville, Tampa and Orlando areas. The event is made possible through the generosity of sponsors and fund-raising events that include the annual Northwest Florida CCD Golf and Sporting Clay tournaments. This first-year event was a complete success and we are already looking forward to assisting District 3 next year.
