WGI served as a Clay Shooting Station Sponsor at the 2026 SASHTO Annual Meeting, held August 21st to 25th in Greenville, South Carolina. Organized by the Southern Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, the conference brought together representatives from 16 member states, including new members Hawaii and Oklahoma, along with federal agencies, private-sector partners, and industry experts working to advance mobility across the South.
A Conference Built Around the Road Ahead
This year’s conference took its theme from “Life is a Highway,” framing the work of transportation planning as an ongoing journey. Sessions and conversations throughout the week covered:
- Building a stronger, more connected transportation network for the region
- Preparing for future mobility needs while managing what exists today
- Advancing engineering, smart infrastructure, and policy solutions
- Strengthening collaboration between state DOTs, federal agencies, and private-sector partners
WGI’s Presence in Greenville
Representing WGI at SASHTO were Mark Topping, Jeremiah Slaymaker, PSM, Scott Boyles, PE, and Mike Madison, PE. Their expertise spans transportation engineering, geospatial services, and alternative delivery, and the team spent the week strengthening relationships with key decision-makers and showcasing how WGI’s multidisciplinary capabilities support cost-effective, future-ready solutions.
Clay Shooting Tournament Sponsorship
WGI’s primary contribution to this year’s conference was sponsoring a station at the SASHTO Clay Shooting Tournament, held Saturday, August 22nd, at River Bend Sportsman’s Resort in Inman, South Carolina. The sponsorship included logo placement across breakfast and lunch tables, lounge areas, and place settings throughout the event, and the WGI station served North Carolina staples Cheerwine, Pepsi, and Sundrop to participants as they moved between shooting stations. Scott Boyles, Jeremiah Slaymaker, and Mark Topping hosted the station.
Every participant received a shotgun shell bag to carry fresh shells and collect empty hulls. WGI also sponsored one of the tournament’s shooting teams, which took home the Team Award, and Clint Morgan, a North Carolina colleague of Scott Boyles, claimed the Individual Award with a score of 95 out of 100. WGI’s raffle prize, a sporting clay vest, went to Chris Lacy, SCDOT Director of Bridge Management.
Session Highlights
A handful of sessions stood out to the WGI team. TDOT presented “Building a Gold Star Communications Program: Integrating Strategic Communications into Project Delivery.” TxDOT covered multimodal strategic planning for the Texas Triangle in a session on meeting the mobility needs of a thriving region. FDOT presented on Modified Phased Design-Build, its refinement of the Progressive Design-Build model and a topic directly relevant to WGI’s Alternative Delivery service line.
Looking Ahead
SASHTO keeps WGI connected to emerging trends, policy changes, and the people and agencies shaping transportation across the South. The conversations that started in Greenville will continue turning into partnerships and projects as the region works to maintain existing infrastructure while preparing for future demand.
The 2027 SASHTO Annual Meeting will be held in Wilmington, North Carolina. WGI intends to continue its involvement, supporting regional cooperation and building on the connections made in Greenville.
