The Chief Engineer serves as the subject matter expert and technical specialist across the Buildings division and is actively engaged with our clients and projects, leading or managing the following:

  • Reviews the technical accuracy and completeness of the structural engineering documents for projects.
  • Provides leadership, technical supervision, development and evaluation of technicians, intern engineers, engineers in training (EIT) and junior engineers.
  • Assists with business development activities including marketing and proposal preparation, as necessary.
  • Signing and sealing of assigned projects.
  • Prepares and/or directs preparation of calculation packages and designs as required by the Authority Having Jurisdiction.
  • Assists in discipline, project, and staffing budgets.
  • Where appropriate, curating and presenting content at conventions.
  • Meet with clients and/or owners to review engineering needs and prepare options for review and direction.
  • Demonstrates fiscal accountability and responsibility and understanding of market forces pertaining to fees, scope, and schedule requirements.

    • Ability to travel to other WGI office locations and jobsites.

    The Chief Engineer is preferred to have the following:

    • Licensed as a Structural Engineer (SE) in the State of Illinois, California, Oregon, Nevada or Arizona or have the ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.
    • Mastery of post-tensioned concrete analysis and design.
    • Proficiency with cold-formed steel framing analysis and design.
    • Proficiency with high-rise structural design.
    • LEED accredited design professional.
    • Proficiency in parametric design tools and/or computer programming skills (e.g., Rhino, Grasshopper, etc.).

    • Proficiency in engineering design software (e.g., ADAPT, Tekla Structural Designer, SAP2000, RAM Structural Systems, RISA 3D, etc.).
    • Proficiency in BIM modeling software (Revit) and/or other drafting software (AutoCAD).
    • Effective use in basic Microsoft Office suite (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, etc.).
    • Ability to travel to other WGI office locations and jobsites.

    The Chief Engineer is preferred to have the following:

The Chief Engineer serves as the subject matter expert and technical specialist across the Buildings division and is actively engaged with our clients and projects, leading or managing the following:

  • Reviews the technical accuracy and completeness of the structural engineering documents for projects.
  • Provides leadership, technical supervision, development and evaluation of technicians, intern engineers, engineers in training (EIT) and junior engineers.
  • Assists with business development activities including marketing and proposal preparation, as necessary.
  • Signing and sealing of assigned projects.
  • Prepares and/or directs preparation of calculation packages and designs as required by the Authority Having Jurisdiction.
  • Assists in discipline, project, and staffing budgets.
  • Where appropriate, curating and presenting content at conventions.
  • Meet with clients and/or owners to review engineering needs and prepare options for review and direction.
  • Demonstrates fiscal accountability and responsibility and understanding of market forces pertaining to fees, scope, and schedule requirements.

  • The Chief Engineer is required to have the following:

    • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited four-year college.
    • Minimum 15-20+ years of post-registration experience in structural engineering.
    • Licensed as a Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Texas or Florida and have the ability to become registered in other states in which WGI operates within 6 months of employment.
    • Mastery with International Building Code (IBC) and corresponding design codes as well as materials specific to our project types (concrete, steel, masonry, wood and post-tensioning).
    • Possess advanced written, oral, and drawing communication skills.
    • Proficiency in engineering design software (e.g., ADAPT, Tekla Structural Designer, SAP2000, RAM Structural Systems, RISA 3D, etc.).
    • Proficiency in BIM modeling software (Revit) and/or other drafting software (AutoCAD).
    • Effective use in basic Microsoft Office suite (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, etc.).
    • Ability to travel to other WGI office locations and jobsites.

    The Chief Engineer is preferred to have the following:

    • Licensed as a Structural Engineer (SE) in the State of Illinois, California, Oregon, Nevada or Arizona or have the ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.
    • Mastery of post-tensioned concrete analysis and design.
    • Proficiency with cold-formed steel framing analysis and design.
    • Proficiency with high-rise structural design.
    • LEED accredited design professional.
    • Proficiency in parametric design tools and/or computer programming skills (e.g., Rhino, Grasshopper, etc.).

Responsibilities:

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited four-year college, Master's Degree is a strong plus;
  • Demonstrated 10+ years in progressively responsible experience;
  • FL Professional Engineering Registration;
  • Highway design lead experience preferred:
    • Project Management with FDOT;

    • Prior supervisory experience leading an engineering team;
    • Proficiency in Microstation/ORD
    • Experience with 3D Corridor Modeling a strong plus;

  • General knowledge of field survey procedures & equipment
  • Create & interpret 3D surface models, triangulate irregular network & contours
  • Prepare construction staking data for field crews using construction plan sets
  • Process & interpret survey data collected in field
  • Perform research & gather data for new & ongoing projects
  • Maintain & organize digital & paper survey records
  • Collaborate with project managers & RPLS's regarding projects
  • Interact daily with field crew & provide direction & support for ongoing projects
  • Potential for occasional field work, including site inspections, courthouse research & quality assurance
  • Ability to read, write & interpret legal descriptions, easements & right-of-ways
  • Ability to understand construction plans & general construction principals
  • This position will work cooperatively under the direction of the Market Leaders and Project Surveyors and in relations with several other division professionals in the Austin office
  • Ability to create efficiencies through innovation and technology is a plus 
  • Associate of Applied Science/Bachelor of Science Degree in Geomatics or equivalent plus 5+ years of experience preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years surveying experience for infrastructure projects supporting state and local government agencies
  • Certification as an SIT in Texas or ability to receive certification in Texas and work towards licensure
  • Familiarity and experience in using MicroStation is required as it relates to supporting all aspects of TxDOT transportation projects is a plus
  • Familiarity and experience in using Civil3D, TopoDOT, TBC, GeoPAK, etc.

  • Ability to work independently and on large multi-discipline teams
  • Microsoft office skills – including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills
