In the dynamic world of architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC), mentorship plays a pivotal role in shaping the creative and innovative professionals of tomorrow. WGI stands at the forefront of this mission, with individuals such as Robby Vogel, Director of Structural Engineering, leading the charge in empowering the next generation of AEC leaders through involvement with programs like the Louisiana Tech Architecture Program.
A Bridge Between Practice & Theory
For the past four years, Robby has dedicated his time and expertise to mentoring students in the Master of Architecture program at Louisiana Tech University’s School of Design, and this year was no different. Thanks to initiatives like the LSBAE Mary “Teeny” Simmons Architecture Education and Research Fund, Louisiana Tech has been able to establish a structural engineer consultancy program, fostering a closer connection between academic theory and real-world practice.
As the consultant structural engineer, Robby is invited each quarter to spend three immersive days in the graduate studio, providing invaluable guidance to students as they navigate the complexities of architectural design. But his role extends beyond technical instruction alone; it encompasses fostering a deeper understanding of the symbiotic relationship between structural engineering and architectural design.
Throughout his visits, Robby engages students in meaningful discussions, helping them explore various structural systems and select solutions that align with their design goals. As projects progress, he encourages students to consider the practical implications of each design, preparing them for the collaborative nature of professional practice where architects and engineers must work hand in hand to bring projects to fruition.
Fostering Excellence & Celebrating Success
And the impact of Robby’s mentorship extends far beyond the classroom. Several of his mentees have since achieved recognition(s) for their work, including winning prestigious competitions such as the 2023 ACSA/AISC Steel Design Student Competition.
These accomplishments serve as a further testament to the transformative power of mentorship and the importance of bridging the gap between academia and industry.
A Commitment to Tomorrow’s Leaders
Robby’s involvement with the Louisiana Tech School of Design exemplifies WGI’s commitment to giving back to the profession and investing in the future of the AEC industry. By nurturing talent and fostering a culture of collaboration, WGI continues to play a vital role in shaping the architects, engineers, and construction professionals of tomorrow.
As we look ahead, let us draw inspiration from leaders like Robby, whose dedication to mentorship ensures that the next generation of AEC professionals is equipped to tackle the challenges of tomorrow with skill, innovation, and resilience.
