Project Spotlight: Leon Creek Greenway Hike-and-Bike Trail

Discover how WGI is helping transform San Antonio’s recreational landscape with the Leon Creek Greenway Hike-and-Bike Trail—a 7.54-mile multi-use path designed to enhance mobility, connect communities, and create a safer, more accessible outdoor experience for all.

San Antonio’s park system is taking a major step forward with the expansion of the Leon Creek Hike-and-Bike Trail, a transformative project that will enhance mobility, accessibility, and community connectivity.

Spanning 7.54 miles with a 12-foot-wide trail, this initiative is designed to link multiple parks across the city, providing residents and visitors with a safe, scenic, and sustainable route for recreation and transportation. WGI is proud to be a key contributor to this visionary project, leveraging our multidisciplinary expertise to ensure seamless execution and long-term success.

Transforming Connectivity and Accessibility

Stretching from Camargo Park to Pearsall Park through Port San Antonio, the Leon Creek Greenway is a critical piece in San Antonio’s larger vision of a connected park system. The project not only increases accessibility to green spaces but also fosters a healthier, more walkable city.

With multiple trailheads, park connections, and over 500 new trees planned for the corridor, the greenway will serve as a scenic, environmentally friendly, and practical commuting option for residents and visitors alike.

A Comprehensive Approach to Trail Development

WGI’s civil engineering, mobility, and subsurface utility engineering (SUE) teams are collaborating with the City of San Antonio to bring this ambitious project to life.

As a subconsultant to T-Core Engineers, our team is responsible for a wide range of critical services, ensuring that the trail not only meets technical and safety standards but also enhances the overall user experience.

One of the most complex aspects of this project is utility coordination, which requires extensive collaboration with multiple stakeholders, including the City of San Antonio, The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), and federal entities. Given the trail’s proximity to an active airstrip and its route through Port San Antonio—a semi-retired Air Force base with aging infrastructure—our team is navigating unique challenges to integrate modern infrastructure with existing utilities.

Additionally, WGI’s mobility team is leading the intersection design, focusing on safe crossings at multiple streets and three creek crossings. By prioritizing pedestrian and cyclist safety, we are helping create a trail that is not only accessible but also enjoyable for the community.

WGI’s Role in the Project

As a trusted engineering and mobility partner, WGI is playing an integral role in ensuring the successful design and implementation of this transformative project. Alongside T-Core Engineers, WGI’s expertise is being leveraged across multiple disciplines to enhance the trail’s infrastructure, safety, and usability.

Our team is proud to be leading efforts in:

  • Civil Engineering: Developing the safe union between pedestrian and vehicular facilities.
  • Pedestrian Mobility and Safety: Designing safe and efficient crossings at multiple intersections and creek crossings.
  • Traffic Control Planning: Developing strategies to minimize disruption during construction.
  • Utility Coordination and Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE): Managing infrastructure challenges, particularly in the complex environment of Port San Antonio.
  • Signage and Striping: Implementing clear, accessible signage to enhance user navigation.

Through strategic planning and collaboration, we are helping shape the Leon Creek Greenway into a seamless and user-friendly experience.

A Commitment to Enhancing Quality of Life

Beyond infrastructure, the Leon Creek Greenway project represents a commitment to improving San Antonio’s quality of life. The expansion of recreational opportunities, the promotion of sustainable transportation, and the addition of green infrastructure will provide long-lasting benefits for generations to come.

WGI Project Manager, Adrian Garcia, PE, shared his enthusiasm on the project in stating: “Collaborating with the City of San Antonio and local engineers to enhance the walkability and access to City Parks and to promote the revitalization of this unique space will forever serve as a truly rewarding experience.”
