WGI has been engaged by Martin County, FL, to provide the Hogg and Mapp Creek Stormwater Treatment Area (STA) design services pursuant to WGI’s continuing Environmental Consulting contract. Hogg Creek has been identified as the second (2nd) major contributor of high concentrations of total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and copper by South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) water quality monitoring.
The upstream watershed of Hogg Creek is approximately 2,400 acres, the majority of which is agricultural or pasture land use. This project is the single most beneficial nutrient treatment project listed in the County’s Stormwater Needs Assessment, whereby it estimates to remove 6,800 lbs. of TN per year (47%) and 3,700 lbs. of TP per year (80%). This project proposes to design and construct a Stormwater Treatment Area (STA) in the downstream vicinity of Hogg Creek that will also incorporate the Mapp Creek watershed located just to the north. The project may include a hybrid biological/chemical treatment component along with conventional STA wetland treatment for an effective and efficient treatment train. The 40-acre project will require land acquisition, design, survey, permitting, construction, and monitoring.
• Combined two capital improvement projects (Hogg Creek STA and Mapp Creek STA) into one project, saving money for the County by avoiding duplicative efforts.
• Restored wetland hydrology within the County’s Mapp Creek Preserve Area.
• Addressed nutrient removal to contribute to preventing harmful algae blooms in the St. Lucie River
