WGI designed a 36-foot wide by 100-foot long multi-span bridge for the Town of Ocean Ridge. The bridge is located in the Intracoastal Waterway just south of the Boynton Inlet and provides the single point of access between Highway A1A (North Ocean Boulevard) and more than 50 residences on the island. The replacement and widening of the existing bridge were completed using phased construction that maintained at least one lane of vehicle traffic across the bridge at all times and maintained utility services to the island during the bridge replacement without interruption. The bridge was constructed utilizing prestressed concrete piles, concrete pile caps, and prestressed concrete deck units that are transversely post tensioned. The bridge features decorative concrete pilasters with a decorative metal lattice railing above the concrete barrier walls.
WGI staff provided structural design services and construction administration services. Design services included preparation of construction design plans, signed and sealed design calculations, preparation of an engineer’s cost estimate, and oversight of the permit application process. Construction services included observation of the concrete prestressing, reinforcement, and concrete placement. Field and prestressed yard observations were completed throughout construction so that final certification could be provided.
