The project consisted of a study to replace two culvert crossings that were structurally failing. The study was to determine the best alternatives for the culvert replacements and recommend detour or diversion alternatives. One of the crossings analyzed was a double 9-foot by 9-foot concrete box culvert at Bradley Creek, a FEMA regulator floodway. The study required an HEC-RAS model to show that the recommended replacement culvert would not adversely impact the floodplain.
Phase 2 of the project was built on the Phase 1 Study to replace double 54-inch culverts with double 66-inch culverts as the existing structure had failed with leaking pipe joints and collapsing end walls. Additionally, a double 9-foot by 9-foot concrete box culvert had undergone significant maintenance repairs and had structural deficiencies with the wing walls and overall differential settlement. The WGI Team provided a survey, drainage design and prepared construction documents to replace the culvert with a double 10-foot by 10-foot concrete bridge culvert in the same location. The proposed structure is longer, spanning the right-of-way to accommodate future widening to four lanes. Additionally, 3,000 feet of roadway was reconstructed or resurfaced as part of the repair. An onsite diversion detour was detailed in the plans to accommodate vehicular and pedestrian traffic during construction. The culvert is in a FEMA Regulatory Floodway, and a No-Rise certification was prepared. Environmental permits were acquired through USACE and SJRWMD.
