The 35th annual Engineer It! competition was held on Saturday, April 10, 2022, in West Palm Beach, Florida. Engineer It! is an annual engineering design competition jointly presented to students in grades 1st – 12th by the Florida Engineering Society Palm Beach Chapter & the Cox Science Center and Aquarium.Â
Each year, multiple organizations in Palm Beach County sponsor and judge the student engineering competition where this year WGI was represented by Rick Joseph, Giovanni Ortiz, Jimmy Richie, PE, and Chad Johnson, PE. Approximately 145 students from 37 schools registered to compete for $5,000 in cash prizes in four events: Drop It!, Float It!, Launch It! and Thrill It!.
Hundreds of egg drop containers, penny-carrying foil boats, plastic water bottle rockets, and thrilling roller coasters were put to the test over the course of the day. Containers were dropped, foil boats were sunk, rockets were launched, and roller coasters plunged to demonstrate students’ knowledge and execution of engineering and construction principles.
These future AEC professionals were eager to compete and as usual, they exceeded expectations with their innovative and creative designs and techniques that impressed the panel of judges. Some of the awe-inspiring designs that took home trophies included a 36-gram egg drop container surviving a 50-foot fall, foil boats carrying nearly 300 pennies, bottle rockets with over 10 seconds of flight time, and coasters rolling for 30 seconds while surviving multiple loop-de-loops!
WGI would like to extend an immense congratulations to all the competitors and participants on another successful Engineer It! event! We are also extremely proud and grateful to our associate volunteers who put their passion for people on full display with their mentorship of the future generation of engineers. Keep the inspiration coming!
