The St. John is a collection of brand-new apartment homes located south of Downtown San Antonio and within walking distance of the San Antonio River.
These new apartments were built within the former St. John’s Seminary, as part of Mission DG’s efforts to redevelop and transform this rapidly deteriorating 13.6 acre former campus.
WGI provided Civil Engineering services for this project, coordinating with the developer and land owner to redevelop this historic site into a multifamily development.
Services included obtaining entitlements, permitting & design, preparation of new construction documents for garden style multifamily, incorporating historic buildings into the site plan, and coordination with City staff on the mitigation and preservation of an acequia discovered onsite.
3 original historic buildings on the property were preserved and revitalized, while 4 new buildings were added providing a total of 228 new residential units.
The St. John features brick walls, restored flooring and stained-glass accents, offering residents a contemporary living experience rooted within San Antonio culture and tradition.
The project is Energy Star certified, LEED Certified & has received a NAHB Green Certification.
Earlier this month, The St. John was named the 2021 Chairman’s Award Winner in ULI Americas Jack Kemp Excellence in Affordable and Workforce Housing Awards.
ULI’s Jack Kemp Excellence in Affordable and Workforce Housing Awards recognize exemplary developments nationwide that demonstrate creativity in expanding housing opportunities, while also meeting affordable and workforce housing needs, in order to create more mixed-income communities.
In 2020, the St. John also nabbed the Best Affordable Multifamily Residential Development Award from the San Antonio Business Journal during the 2020 Building San Antonio Awards. This award celebrates excellence in real estate development, including those in professions vital to building San Antonio, such as engineering and contracting.
