The American Planning Association (APA) issues several publications to alert planners to innovative and effective planning approaches. In 2022, as an industry thought leader, WGI produced a Zoning Practice dedicated to Mobility Hubs to meet the growing demand for guidance on integrating the increasing number of modes such as microtransit and micromobility.
The Zoning Practice report presents a history of mobility hubs, highlighting recent trends that popularized the concept, such as e-commerce and new mobility, which have increased attention to options for first and last-mile deliveries and connections to transit.
In developing typologies, the WGI team realized that, in practice, there are two ways urban planners will approach hubs: a transit focus and a land-use focus. The typologies for transit-focused hubs include (1) Urban Large Intermodal, (2) Urban Transit Station, (3) Suburban Park and Ride, and (4) Individual Bus Stops. For hubs with a land use focus, the types are (1) Mixed-Use Districts, (2) Campuses, (3) Structured Garages, and (4) Individual Buildings. The Zoning Practice report concludes with additional details and trends affecting hubs.
