WGI provided an evaluation of both the north and south jetty at the Sebastian Inlet to assess the sustained damage from Hurricane Matthew. A report documenting the observed conditions, including photographs and recommendations for repairs, was prepared for the District. The jetty sustained minimal damage. Concrete restoration and open grating replacement plans and specifications were prepared to correct the minor damage caused by a significant wind and wave event on the Atlantic Ocean.
WGI staff designed the jetty rehabilitation project in 2004. The rehabilitation project included a study of the wave climate and replacement of the jetty piling and deck surface to properly encapsulate the rock in the crib portion of the jetty. The large granite boulders provide a vital component needed to dissipate the wave energy and create a safe inlet for boaters.
To increase the jetty’s usefulness as a recreation facility, a breaking wave-resistant railing system was designed so that the jetty could be used for recreational fishing. In addition, an expanded eastern terminal was created to increase the area for fishing. This added amenity provides a major attraction to the Sebastian Inlet State Park. It is a tremendous draw for tourists and locals giving them a safe prime fishing spot in the Atlantic Ocean.
