WGI PROJECT

Census Bureau Headquarters Parking Structure

Location:
Suitland, MD
Project Size:
6 Levels, 3800 Spaces
Awards:
GSA Design Excellence Award

Project Description

Designed and built to provide a world-class workplace for 6,000 employees, the Census Bureau’s headquarters is a state-of-the-art facility, receiving widespread praise for its elegant and efficient design featuring sweeping curves and glass cladding with vertical wooden louvers. The building won the General Services Administration’s Design Excellence Award and achieved a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold rating.

To make the parking structures “green,” they were designed to promote plant growth on the exterior walls. Green screens feature three seasonal varieties of climbing ivy, which act as a highly permeable skin of light-filtering leaves to increase oxygen levels and allow for natural ventilation. WGI developed bridging documents for the two six-level parking structures.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Three-bay single-thread design circulation system
  • Two-way traffic throughout
  • 90-degree angled parking
