Initial efforts included the Commission’s authorization to craft a Communitywide Assessment coalition grant application for an FY 2020 United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Brownfield grant. The effort required an extensive review of GMRC planning and economic development documentation, a review of member communities’ comprehensive plans, research of member communities’ demographics (census data), multiple meetings with GMRC planning staff, and research of commercial real estate and abandoned properties to identify prospective Brownfield sites for referral as target Brownfield projects in the grant application.
After winning a $500K FY 2022 USEPA Brownfield grant, the Commission awarded WGI a contract for Brownfield consulting services that include Support for community outreach/public involvement and engagement activities, Development of an inventory of prospective Brownfield sites in the Region and assistance in the creation of an evaluation ranking tool, Performance of Phase I Environmental Site Assessments, planning and performance of Site Characterization (Phase II) assessments, Remediation/reuse planning involving
reuse vision/charrettes sessions, and Programmatic support services.
