The Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) North Building is a seven-story building constructed in 1970. The slab-on-grade level (Level G1) and the first supported level (Level G2) comprise a parking structure for faculty and staff parking. The remaining upper levels of the facility serve as office and classroom space. The parking levels allow for a parking layout that accommodates 109 parking spaces over an area of approximately 20,500 square feet per level. The original design of the supported Parking Level G2 consisted of a 10 inch two-way conventionally reinforced concrete slab.
WGI designed a full slab replacement of the supported parking under the North Building. Approximately 25,000 square feet of a 10” thick floor slab was removed and replaced while keeping the building in operation. Perimeter walls and columns were braced structurally during floor replacement. All mechanical and electrical systems were replaced and were designed by FTC&H.
