The parking structure for the Hertz Corporation at the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport includes an elevated parking/storage facility. This elevated facility was originally constructed in the 1980s and was a single elevated floor of factory topped precast double tees, inverted tees, ledge spandrels, and columns. The structure sustained damage to the precast structural elements due to transit bus traffic. The operation of this facility utilizes Metropolitan transit buses to transport their patrons to and from their rental cars to the airport terminal. The operation is continual, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Certain aspects of the original design failed to account for the large point loads and the dynamic effects of these large vehicles (40,000 pounds).Â
WGI evaluated the structure and developed repair options to strengthen the weakest of the elements. WGI also proposed restricting the transit buses’ operation to offer the Hertz Corporation an economical alternative to the potentially costly repairs. WGI has also performed evaluation and repair options at other Hertz Facilities at Miami International Airport, Newark Airport, and New York’s JFK Airport.Â
