The Marine Way Historic District has been experiencing periodic flooding for decades due to its surrounding elevation and proximity to the Intracoastal Waterway. The City of Delray Beach contracted WGI to analyze various district components, including the recurring problem of sea-level rise, private property rights, stormwater management, aging infrastructure, and environmental impacts.
WGI prepared a stormwater model of the Marine Way watershed, developed alternative solutions, supported the City’s staff pursuit of state and federal funding for the project, and provided a robust public outreach plan to solicit input and inform the residents of the project’s progress.
The design components included a 120-cf stormwater pump station and backup generator, replacement of a failing seawall, nutrient-reducing structures, a manifold discharge bay, new roadway improvements, and utility infrastructure.
The project team, which included WGI and City staff, reviewed input from residents, local business owners, and regulatory authorities and selected improvements that provided the City with the most resilient solution to the localized flooding during king tide and substantial rain events.
The raised seawall will protect Marine Way and adjacent residents from rising sea levels, while the stormwater pump station will protect and recover from moderate and substantial rainfall events.
