The Administration Building on the John Carroll University Campus in University Heights was originally constructed circa 1931. The clock tower within the Administration Building is known as Grasselli Tower. The three-story building’s exterior walls and the eight-story tower are constructed of multi-wythe clay brick masonry with limestone accents at copings, window perimeters, water tables, and decorative panels.
WGI provided engineering services for design, bidding, and construction administration services to restore the exterior walls of the tower and Administration Building arcade. The restoration included 100 percent masonry re-pointing, brick and stone crack repairs, stone spall repairs, removal and replacement of brick masonry at isolated repair areas, isolated steel lintel replacement, masonry cleaning and the application of a clear water repellent, as well as the replacement/installation of sealants at window and door perimeters, copings, water tables, etc. The project also included installing a new sheet membrane roof system and replacing the perimeter copper counter-flashing at the belfry floor and roof.
