WGI was retained to provide consultation for the replacement or repairs of the seawall for this club on the Atlantic Ocean. The existing walls and repairs date back to the 1920s. Years of weather and hurricane damage had damaged the wall to the point where repairs were not the best solution, and a replacement was required. Due to the extensive tie-back system, pool located adjacent to the wall, and the foundation for the two-story club building within ten feet of the existing wall, placing the new wall upland of the existing wall was not an option due to the existing foundations and pool structure.
Conventional seawall construction was also not an option. Instead, our team designed a new cantilevered wall, which was placed within eighteen inches of the east face of the existing wall utilizing press-in technology. The “Giken” machine was developed to pre-auger holes and press-in sheet piles while advancing along the newly constructed wall. The wall was constructed without vibration or damage to the existing building or pool. In addition to the unique design, a new concrete cap to support a glass railing and a concrete facing on the exposed portions of the seaward side was provided for added corrosion protection. The 360-foot-long wall was constructed on time and within budget.
