This design-build project reconstructed the SR 559 bridge over I-4. It realigned I-4 eastbound to accommodate a wider median for a future high-speed rail corridor. SR 559 and the interchange ramps were reconstructed to a higher profile to accommodate vertical clearance for the future rail corridor. SR 559 was widened from a two-lane rural roadway to a four-lane divided urban typical section within the limits of the interchange reconstruction.
A critical component of the project was coordination with FGT on relocation of a 12 inch gas main within the interchange reconstruction limits. Based on coordination with Polk County’s concurrent improvements to CR 559A, the project also included realignment of Bay Lake Connector and construction of a new jug handle u-turn to accommodate high volume truck traffic accessing the truck stop. New interchange lighting was installed to improve safety and nighttime visibility
